Terena,
It is very possible that this mantis is getting ready to die. They typically lay an egg sack just before winter and then die. The egg sack will hatch in the spring.

As the article states, they eat insects in your yard. They can be effective for pest control but they may also eat beneficial insects.
-- Contributed by: Kathleen Robertsthere has been a praying mantis on my window screen for the past three days hanging upside down. I close the shade at night and in the mornig its still there it slowly moves its head and nothing else. Could it be sick its alsmost winter is it going into hibernation?

-- Contributed by: terenaNo, a praying mantis cannot spit at you. They are harmless. A stick mantis is just a type of mantis that looks like a stick. It acts as a camouflage to protect it from predators.
-- Contributed by: Kathleen RobertsIs it true that a praying mantis can "spit" in your eye. I have always heard this. Also what is the difference between the praying mantis and the "stick mantis"? I've heard that these are two different insects. Is that so?
-- Contributed by: Linda BundrenA bite may be painful, but otherwise it is harmless to people.
