Hi Rod, Sod cutters work best when the soil is moist, but not soaking wet.

Does the lawn need to be wet to use a gas powered sod cutter?

Hi David, If you have clay soil or a hard-packed soil, it might work better if it was slightly moist (not soaking wet). Otherwise, no soil prep should be necessary.

Question regarding soil prep. Before using a power sod cutter - is dry soil okay, or should it be damp? (We are eliminating the lawn. The sod will be going to the yard waste recycling center. It is not suitable for use elsewhere).

Thanks in advance.

Gas sod cutters are about $90 a day.

This is going to depend on the type of cutter you want and how large of an area you will be working in. Try looking at a few of the different types at Amazon.com.
