Thank you for the kind comments Megan. I'm glad you are ready to try beekeeping yourself. I think you will find it to be a very rewarding hobby. Please stop by again and tell us how you are doing.
-- Contributed by: Kathleen RobertsI just wanted to say how helpful this article was. I've been researching and considering raising a hive and after a year I decided that 2010 is my year to raise one. I live in Ohio and this article led me to a few options as to where to purchase my bee packages and queens. Thank you so much!

Most grants are given for research purposes. However, if you contact your local State Ag Department, they may be able to give you some information. The USDA may have something that would help as well.
Some states are giving small grants to help people get started in beekeeping because they realize that with no bees there will be no crops. With the recent Colony Collapse Disorder, there has been a real decline in bee populations.
The Illinois State Beekeepers Association should be able to help you with more information. If there is such a grant for your state, they should know about it.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte GerberCan honeybee colonies survive in west Texas desert type environment with mesquite and cactus and other lite vegetation?
-- Contributed by: richardBees have been increasingly absent from my area for the past few years, and my garden shows it. My ligustrium are in full bloom right now and whereas in past years there are always bees on the plants this year I have not seen the first bee. I want to set up a hive, not necessarily for the honey but to have bees for pollination. I am looking for any advice on doing this and how to get started.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte GerberI would like to start raising bees for honey and for helping to pollinate the environment. I live on a 300+ acre farm in Pennsylvania, and would like to do this, not only as a job and hobby, but as a way to help the environment. Can you send me anything to help me with this endevour and how to get started? I am very interested in doing this. Thank you!

-- Contributed by: MelissaJamie, unfortunately we can not email individual information to people. There are, however, several places where you can get information. One is you local extension office if you have one. They may even have classes that you can take.
Another place is your library. They should have several books on honey bees. You may also find information by contacting the American Beekeeping Federation.

-- Contributed by: jamieUnless the hive in your yard is causing some kind of problem for you, it is best to leave it alone. If you feel it is necessary to move the hive, call your county extension office and have an expert come out and assess the situation. Doing it yourself is not a good idea. Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: Kathleen RobertsI don't know if I should bother the nest in my back yard or get a hive and transfer the hive. I know nothing about bees, but I thought maybe a hive would be better for the colony. Do you have a suggestion?
