Hi Jorge, You would need around 495 pounds of grass seed for such an area, or 1/2 of that amount if you are just over-seeding the area. If you buy this at a local nursery, they should be able to calculate this for you, based on the type of seed you are buying.

Hi Paul, You could use Zoysia as a patch on your bald patches, but bermuda and zoysia often compete for the same space. Zoysia takes a while to take hold and the bermuda may well take over before it does. I understand your concern about the larger leafed St. Augustine, and it wouldn't blend well with the Bermuda. There may be some fescue varieties that will blend with your lawn though. Check with a local nursery to see what they have to offer, they may have exactly what you need!

I live in North Texas and have bermuda on my lawn. The trees around my 14 year old home have finally become large enough to impede the bermuda growth in the more shaded areas. Can I plant a different grass such as zoysia in the bare or shaded areas to help fill the bald spots? If so, will they blend sufficiently so they don't look dramatically different? I don't want to introduce St. Augustine as the two are really different in looks and fertilizing needs. Thanks.

Fortunately, Bahiagrass does not need a lot of fertilizer to be healthy. First, I would recommend getting a soil test done through your local Extension Service office. it can be done at a very minimal cost and will help you provide just what your lawn needs.

Allow your lawn a bit of recovery time in the winter. It may not be pretty now, but you will have a healthier lawn overall. About two weeks after it starts to regrow in the spring, apply a complete fertilizer that will allow for two to four pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of lawn. Apply two or three applications from spring through fall. Applying it too early or too late in the year can damage your grass.

A good basic guideline for central Florida is to apply a complete fertilizer in March and August. You can make a third application in September if desired. If your grass has a tendency toward yellowing, you may also apply an iron product, such as ferrous sulfate. Use two ounces mixed in three to five gallons of water for every 1000 square feet. This can be done in May.

Allow your grass to grow between three and four inches for a strong, healthy lawn. Be careful not to over water--when leaf blades fold up, this means they need water. Over watering is wasteful and not good for your grass.

Following these guidelines will give you a lawn that can resist most pests and weeds. Do not use a weed-and-feed type of fertilizer because this can actually damage Bahiagrass.

If you must, apply a post-emergent herbicide in May to control broadleaf-type weeds. Ask your local Extension Service for specific types that will not damage your grass.

I have Bahaia grass and live in central florida, outside of Tampa Bay. What is a good fertilizer to put down to kill Dollar Weeds and other weeds growing in the grass, Iam looking to green up the grass also and suggestions would be very helpful.
