Hi Michele, The climate in which you live can make a difference in the materials that you use. If you live in the north, gravel may make a better path since the ground would heave in the spring due to frost. If the slope is slight, perhaps you could use railroad ties for steps or skip the step all together.

-- Contributed by: MicheleIt doesn't really matter what kind of sand you use. You can just get a bag of "sandbox sand" at Lowe's or where ever you decide to shop. If you have many stones to set, some places will sell sand by the truck load as well.

When installing stepping stones (12 x 12 squares bought at Lowes), is there a particular 'sand' that should be used? I guess what I'm asking is one 'sand' better than another?
