Hi David, These trees are generally easy to care for. I'm thinking they may be getting too much fertilizer. Young plants only need a little, even if they are on a maintenance plan, or you may burn their leaves. Try cutting back on the Miracle Grow and see if that doesn't help in the short term. Also be sure you don't over-water the plants; try watering in the late evening so it isn't evaporated as quickly.

Alternatively, I would check the bark to see if it shows signs of Coryneum canker, which sometimes affects these trees when planted far from the coastline.

I just planted 3 Monterey Cypress' and 2 of 3 are doing fine but the 3rd is turning a different shade of green and browning at the tips (and is not as soft as it once was). All three I planted the same way (potting soil and Miracle Grow – for plants) but I used a little more Miracle Grow for this particular tree (it was the 1st planted). My question 1) what is the feeding intervals for a Monterey Cypress (amount of watering, fertilizer, etc.)? 2) what approach should I take to get my tree back in shape?

Note: In and effort to dilute the Miracle Grow used on this tree, I have started watering it daily. Also, I have several evergreens on my property and they are all very healthy. Last, my soil is largely decomposed granite and I live in So Cal (Riverside, CA).

Thanks and your feedback is appreciated

Hi Sherry, Yes, it is a fungus called columned stinkhorn. It has a bad odor. It is removed by removing the affected mulch.

A few years ago, I used some cypress mulch (from Home Depot) in a flower bed. After about one week, I noticed what looked like orange crab legs emerging in the mulch. Upon further look, there were eggs at the base of the orange legs. I even removed some of the eggs and put them in a plastic bag to see exactly what was hatching. The eggs hatched into the orange legs. Could this have been a fungus as I didn't actually see any live crabs(only the orange legs) or some odd infestation? Also, there was a bad odor. I didn't notice any of this upon initial spreading. I ended up removing all of the mulch and replacing with another type and have never had any problems.
