Thank you for sharing your experience Derek. I hope using the pint brush result in a much higher pollination rate. Please keep us posted with your results.

we are growing them hydroponically and have been germinating in rockwool with near zero fail rate. We have not experienced any difficulties with germination or growth. Now pollination that is a different story, about 1 in 20. Flower sites are off the charts but indoors with no insects we get little pollination from the fans. I am going to try the paint brush technique. Thanks, liked the article.

I have had luck with a cheap ice chest in which i put about 3 inches of water and a 40 watt acquariam heater laying on its side. The water will stay at whatever temp you select. Float a plastic seed starter tray on top of the water with one or two seeds in each little container, mosten with squirt bottle, close the lid and wait for em to grow. Cheap, ez, fun and works well with almost any kind of seed.

Bought some Bhut Jolokia seeds and planted them in one of these $5.00 "greenhouse" seed starters at wal-mart. Soaked the soil in miracle-grow solution(1 tbl. per gal of water). Placed this plastic green-house between 2 heat lamps on-top of my snake enclosure(yes, i have snakes.) Temps are a constant 84 degrees. planted them on sunday, today is thursday...and they have germinated. just waiting for them to break through the soil now. I cheated and moved some of the soil with a toothpick..and sure enough the seed has "popped".

Your germination method is interesting to say the least! I would be concerned about pollination. You may end up with some interesting hybrids.

I was able to start a seed successfully by putting it in my oven with the light on inside. It keeps it pretty warm and humid. I am not certain but I think it germinated well in about 2 weeks. I should have started it a lot earlier for my area, but we'll see how it does. Also I wonder if I will have any problems with polination as I will have it surrounded by about 24 Jalapeno plants and probably 24 bell peppers.

If you can gain access to volcanic ash, it will reduce your grow tome by almost half.

Hi Brian, There are a variety of climate factors that may be causing the blossom drop, as well as lack of nutrients in the soil. Please check this link (Pepper Forum) to a gardening forum specifically for the Bhut Jolokia plant for additional information.

Hi Chad, Try using a cotton swab or a small paint brush to transfer pollen from one flower to another. Also check to see that your plants are kept moist and have plenty of sun.

I have plenty of flowers, but it never fruits. I tried self pollination and still nothing. The blooms just fall off after a while.

I'm trying to grow these plants in midwest Ohio and I am having trouble getting them to take off. They are about 4" tall, outside, and I started them indoors in March. I slowely got them used to the outside like you're supposed to do. They just don't seem to be getting any bigger. What do I need to do to pollinate them and what with. This is my first time trying to grow something other than grass so you could say I'm a newbe. You're help is appreciated.
