These traps have two kinds of lures. They have the scent of a female beetle, which lures in unsuspecting males. The other lure smells sweet like food, which brings in male and female beetles.
It is possible to purchase bait and create your own trap. Here is a tutorial if you're interested.

It worked very well on all-roses, sunflowers, climbing hydrangea, ornamental grasses, perennials too numerous to name, lets just say it really worked out. We had previously used flour on our cabbages to get the worms and by chance tried powder for the beetles. Came to this site to see if anyone else tried powder. Suggest this is better than the bag traps which gardeners know attract more then they catch.
