Jasmine plant question

I live in Oregon and bought a Jasmine plant. I was wondering if it will survive outside in Oregon or do I need to be careful when I have the plant outside?

Hi Jennifer,

Jasmines are a more tropical climate plant. There are some that are supposed to be cool temperature resistant, but I've not had a good experience with those in Oregon when there is a frost and cool temperatures. Jasmines don't like frost or temperatures that get into the low 40s or less, although you will see some varieties that mention they can withstand up to -10 degrees. I don't know what variety you have, so I will have to be very general in my answer.

In Oregon, you will most likely want to take your Jasmine inside for the winter. In Oregon, the cool night temperatures and seasonal frosts can shock a Jasmine and it doesn't recover well. You should keep it indoors when the temperature outside is going to be upper 30s or less.

I did put a bucket over a Jasmine when it was going to be cool at night and that did protect it from frost damage. However, when the temperatues got into the 30s for a few nights in a row, I lost the plant even with the bucket protection.

The answer to your question is yes, you will want to be cautious with Jasmine. When the weather is going to be colder, you should take it inside.

Jasmine are wonderful and the scent and floral beauty they provide are excellent. It's well worth the extra effort to protect them in Oregon!

If you have any other questions please feel free to add a comment to this advice. Enjoy your Jasmine!
