Advice (1)
Depending on how far gone your lawn is, at this point, you may be able to bring it new life by dethatching, aerating and overseeding.
If your lawn is compacted more than ½ inch with dead grass and leaves, remove the thatch using a dethatching rake or a power dethatching machine (these can usually be rented at garden centers). If you dethatch your lawn regularly, you will force buds to grow at the base of the grass stems and free up new grass shoots that were getting suffocated before.
Aerating your lawn with 3-inch holes provides a way for water, oxygen and fertilizer to make it to the roots.
Before you overseed, be sure that all the weeds are gone. You can dig them up or spray with an organic herbicide. You will also have to rake up the bare spots to provide some soil for the seed to adhere to.
Choose a seed that works for your growing region and follow the sowing directions.

Hi,
What type of grass do you have? What zone are you in? Are you interested in organic lawn care or conventional lawn care? Thanks - Susan
I'm in Detroit; just conventional!
